North Texas ARRL update – by Jay Urish, W5GM (ARRL NTx Section Manager)

Greetings North Texans!

I apologize for the silence lately. I am still trying to emerge from backlog created by two weeks of downtime courtesy of FLU-A, and his buddy FLU-B. I hope ya’ll emerged ok from the flu season this year. It sure has been a dozy.

Thank you to everybody that came to the NTX forum at the Cowtown Hamfest. Many good questions were answered and I think we have a solid team at the helm to pilot this ship though this year. I still have not heard anything from HQ on the ARES revamp yet. Please be assured that the moment we hear anything, Chris Ebert and I will pass the information along.

The Irving Hamfest is coming up on March 3rd in Irving Tx. It will be held at the Betcha Bingo Hall located at 2420 W. Irving Blvd Irving, TX 75061. Door open at 8am. I hope see see everybody there!

Mentorfest 2018 is still on schedule for April 28 at the Hella Shrine in Garland, Tx. I am trying to get the flyers out to all DFW area VE teams and clubs for inclusion in their newsletters and handout to people at test sessions. If you have not gotten a flyer yet, *please* email mentorfest@arrlntx.org ASAP and the team will send you one. Also, if you are a VE team lead, please email mentorfest@arrlntx.org and I can mail you a stack of flyers.

I would like to announce the appointment of a new State Government Liason to replace Greg Boren N5SKE, who has faithfully served NTX for many years and it now departing the section to pursue new adventures!

The new SGL is Perry Schrag KF5ZCS. He brings years of local government and COG experience to the table.

I have also appointed a new Section Technical Coordinator (STC). Please welcome John Hamilton KD5IMN. If you ever run up against a technical issue that has you stumped, reach out to John. If he doesn’t know the answer, he probably knows where to find it.

The section now has a Speakers Bureau manager! Bob Adler N5NY (formerly NZ2T and NTX SM). The purpose of the bureau is to act as a clearing house for speakers to come to club meetings etc. If you have a topic you like to talk about and demo to clubs, Please send Bob an email n5ny@arrl.net and register. Conversely, if you are club looking to have somebody come and speak at a meeting, you can reach out to Bob as well.

Hopefully I will get to visit with you at the Irving Hamfest. Please stop by the booth and say hi!
